IMI Surveying MNCs on Competitiveness

IMI has recently begun the fieldwork for the latest round of it's annual Survey of Multinational Companies in Ireland.

For over ten years now the IMI has surveyed the attitudes and experiences of Chief Executives and Senior Managers of multinational companies operating in Ireland.

This year IMI have once again partnered with National Irish Bank to carry out this research.

This series of research has, over the years highlighted the major issues affecting MNCs here and the factors underpinning Ireland's competitiveness and attractiveness for the continued involvement of these organisations in our economy.

The 2008 report showed that multinationals feel Ireland could continue to attract and retain foreign-owned MNC business. With two thirds of all companies indicating that their Irish operation was either strategically important or very important in terms of their global operation.

However, the cost environment was one of the top concerns of firms based in Ireland.

Five of the 'top ten' factors of most importance to Ireland’s competitive position are related to the cost of doing business in Ireland, these included wage costs, the rate of inflation, energy costs, corporation tax and non-labour costs.

Management skill was placed second in the top ten most important factors affecting competitiveness.

In 2008 one third of respondents to the survey expected the numbers they employed to decrease over the coming year. While 35.9% of respondents saw Ireland as uncompetitive and identified China as the biggest threat to Ireland's international competitive position, with India a close second.

This year's report will be published in association with National Irish Bank in October.

IMI and UCC in exclusive negotiations

The Irish Management Institute (IMI) and University College Cork (UCC) have announced the commencement of exclusive negotiations between the two bodies aimed at reaching agreement on the IMI merging with UCC.

Both organisations view this significant development as mutually enhancing the delivery of their strategic objectives in the area of executive education.

UCC President, Dr. Michael Murphy, in welcoming the decision of the IMI Board to engage so positively with UCC, said: “UCC has a long history of excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate education in business disciplines while IMI is a leading international brand in executive education. A merger will strengthen further the capacity of each organisation nationally and internationally, and advances the national agenda for enhanced collaboration between higher education institutions.

"The IMI, from its campus in Sandyford, Dublin, has been the leading Irish provider of executive education for over 50 years and is the only Irish institution listed in the Financial Times list of top international executive education programmes. The Institute has a goal to improve our overall ranking to the top 25 in the world and to continue to offer the highest quality executive training. The Board of IMI had taken a strategic decision to enhance its offerings in the future though seeking a merger with a higher education institution. In recent years, the College of Business and Law at UCC had set out its strategic objective to enhance its capacity in the delivery of executive education regionally and nationally. We look forward to our discussions with UCC and hope they will be successful and to the benefit of Irish business and society", stated Dr. Tom McCarthy, Chief Executive Officer of IMI.

Both institutions have indicated that no further comment will be made during the negotiations to protect the integrity of the ongoing process.
