Many parallels can be drawn between the world of high performance sport and that of successful organisations. The recent achievements of Irish Boxing are built upon a culture of continuous improvement in the systems and processes put in place to support these athletes, as well as the continuous professional development of the sport’s High Performance Coaches and Managers.
An Irish Olympian himself and seven-time National Champion, Billy Walsh has worked the corners of eight Olympic medal winners over the last three Olympics. In praise of Billy and the other coaches involved, Barry McGuigan commented ‘they are doing something seriously right’. Billy is a Graduate of the IMI Diploma in Strategic HRM.
Fergus Barry is Programme Director of the IMI’s Diploma in Strategic HRM. He has designed and delivered Leadership Development Programmes across the public and private sectors and acts as Consultant and Executive Coach at Senior Team level to a host of blue chip companies. He has led research projects in such areas as Strategic Retention, Performance Management and Competency Development. At this session, Fergus will share the latest research and thinking on Strategic HR metrics and the required future competencies for HR.
We hope you can join us and look forward to welcoming you to IMI.
Yours sincerely,

I have worked extensively with hospital registrars for over a decade and, for medical professionals, emotional intelligence is absolutely critical. For example, if there is a medical emergency, the Registrar must remain Read On
Stop managing failure, give performance enhancing feedback…
Working with managers across a wide section of industries and sizes, one of the most common question I hear is: “What is the best way to deal with poor performers?” I now recognise this somewhat negative question as a human impulse that surfaces every time we feel threatened, uncertain or frustrated; our brains are just Read On
The leadership blueprint: what all senior executives can learn from Ireland’s FDI successes
It is through a combination of excellence in strategic thinking and leadership impact that senior managers in Irish operations have continued to win new mandates from their global headquarters. The skills and abilities that generate these management successes are not however relevant only to leaders in multinationals. In an increasingly globalised economy, every senior executive, Read On

It’s a shame, but we often find that managers develop a certain valuable clarity on their organisation only when about to leave a role! Don’t leave it until you’re changing roles to get the Read On
