Who This Programme Is For

Individuals who have successfully completed three IMI Diplomas and wish to take the final step on the pathway to earning an internationally recognised Master of Business degree.

What is the purpose of the Reflective Integrative Assignment (RIA)?

  • The purpose of the Reflective Integrative Assignment (RIA) is to illustrate that the participant who has completed three Diplomas has developed the full capabilities of  a Masters level graduate.
  • It aims to integrate, prioritise and synthesize key reflections, learning and themes that have been developed over the duration of their learning journey.
  • The assignment is 5,000 words in length, valued at 5 credits and assessed on a pass / fail basis.
  • The RIA requires that the participants be able to demonstrate their ability to critically apply learning to major management functions. That means that they need to reflect on their learning from the three IMI Diplomas and further attempt to integrate that learning.
  • Participants need to be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge acquired during their learning journey and from this be able to make recommendations for future organisational enhancement and for their own personal development.
  • In addition participants need to show that they have developed significant research abilities, while integrating academic frameworks, tools and models into practical applications.

Programme Impact

Participants develop further critical thinking, reflective and analytical skills which enhances their existing knowledge and provides a skill set which further develops their organisational capabilities and personal development. Often participants want to progress to further studies such as DBA or PhD and evidence of such skills from prior learning is required.

RIA Information Workshop

A one day RIA Information Workshop will be provided to support participants with this assignment. This Workshop will take place in IMI and attendance is compulsory. It will provide insights into reflective research methodology. It will be facilitated by Dr. Mary Hogan. One to one tutorial support is also provided. This entails a discussion or email exchange with the Programme Director to ensure that the participant is on track. This does not entail reading drafts or providing written feedback – rather to ensure understanding and provide guidance. In addition the support team in the resources centre is available for consultation and support on the writing of and any research for the assignment.

The RIA will be 5,000 words in length, valued at 5 credits and assessed on a pass / fail basis. The deadline is 2 months after the date of the Information Workshop

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this required?

  • Masters level requires that participants become self-directed learners
  • Masters levels requires a level of new knowledge generation from the participants own experience and to demonstrate this new learning
  • For the most part, up to now, participants have been provided with ideas and relevant reading materials—now is their opportunity to show what has been learned and how it was applied in an integrated way

How long is it and what is the deadline for completing it?

The RIA will be 5,000 words in length, valued at 5 credits and assessed on a pass / fail basis. The deadline is 2 months after the date of the Information Workshop

Is the third Diploma awarded also?

Successful participants will receive a third IMI Diploma but not a UCC Postgraduate Certificate. The new progression route culminating in the MBS in Business Practice will operate over a five year timeframe, for participants who:

  • Meet all entry criteria
  • Successfully complete two IMI Diploma/Postgraduate Certificates (with a combined average grade of  Second Class Honours Grade 1  – see table below ) – earning sixty credits.
  • Then complete the content of a third IMI Diploma/Postgraduate Certificate and a 5 credit Reflective Integrative Assignment.

table for RIA

How is the MBS in Business Practice grade awarded?

The pass mark for each component of the programme is 40%. However, to progress to Masters level participants must achieve an average 2nd Class Honours, Grade 1 over two IMI Diplomas. To be awarded the MBS in Business Practice, the final Diploma must be passed (40% or greater) and the Capstone must be passed (graded on a pass/fail basis).

The weighting of each IMI Diploma and the Capstone is as follows:

The grade categories for the MBS are as follows:

table 3 ria

Do I have to follow this sequence or can I complete the Reflective Integrative Assignment after the first or second Diploma?

You have to follow the sequence. The RIA must be the final assignment you submit.

When do I apply to do the MBS and what is involved in the process?

You can apply on the commencement of your third IMI Diploma. An application form must be completed and returned to the Registrar’s Office. Participants will be signed up for the Information Workshop and sent relevant details.

How will my final results letter look?

It will give a breakdown of your Diploma results and the Capstone pass/fail.

Which letters can I put after my name if I successfully complete the MBS in Business Practice?

MBS in Business Practice

Do I have to complete the Reflective Integrative Assignment straight after the third Diploma or can I defer for a while?

We encourage participants to complete it immediately after their third Diploma so that they can go through the same Exam Board and graduate with their classmates. However, provided the 5 year timeframe has not already elapsed, we can make arrangements for a participant to defer to the next Information Workshop.

If I do not complete the Reflective Integrative Assignment, am I awarded a third IMI Diploma?

If you have already signed up for the MBS in Business Practice you would not be awarded anything. However, if you have not signed up for the MBS and don’t complete the RIA you could be awarded a third Diploma. It is not possible, however, to claim a Masters retrospectively.

If the Reflective Integrative Assignment is awarded on a pass/fail basis, why would I bother putting any effort into it?

In line with Masters Standards, the MBS in Business Practice is awarded on a pass/fail basis. However, participants could be awarded a Distinction award if their RIA is of an exceptional standard.

I have moved company and although I based the assignments for my Diplomas on my organisation at the time, I am not in a position to do that with this assignment. What do I do?

As this is an individual reflective piece of work, it does not matter that you are no longer with your previous employer. Your assignment should draw from what you have learnt from the programmes and how you implemented the learning at the time.

Just 3 Steps to a Master of Business

The Master of Business is based around a framework of fourteen IMI Diploma Programmes and BRP.

By completing either of the four pathways below within a five year timeframe, you will earn the required amount of credits to be conferred the title ‘MSc or MBS in Business Practice’, ‘MSc in Data Business or ‘MSc in Digital Business’. The IMI Masters of Business Framework is validated and awarded by University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork.

How does it work?

Step 1: Successfully complete any one of the IMI’s suite of fifteen IMI Diploma programmes.
Step 2: Successfully complete a second IMI Diploma of your choosing achieving an overall grade average of 2.1.
Step 3: Successfully complete the IMI Business Research Project or a third IMI Diploma of your choosing and a Reflective Integrated Assignment (RIA).

Separate to their individual pathways, it must be noted that the IMI Diploma in Data Business Part 1 or the IMI Diploma in Digital Business Part 1 can be taken as the first, second or third diploma in the journey towards an MSc in Business Practice or MBS in Business Practice.

A key feature of the IMI MoB Framework is its flexible timeframe, which allows you to tailor your participation around work/life demands. Whereas each of the steps takes approximately six months to complete, you have a five year window within which to complete all required steps and attain the Masters. Therefore, depending on your preference, you can complete the taught element of the IMI MoB Framework in as little as 18 months. You must complete all elements of the IMI MoB Framework within five years.

The MoB philosophy

Unlike traditional MBAs and Business Masters, the IMI MoB Framework is driven by an intensely practical, action learning philosophy. Throughout the programme, classroom learning is applied to real-life business challenges via exercises, group work, case studies and projects that centre on both your day-to-day work and the challenges currently facing your organisation. Both you and your organisation will derive genuine real-world benefits from your participation.

Who is eligible?

Participants are required to provide evidence of relevant work-based learning at a management level and / or should hold a relevant academic qualification at primary degree level.

To clarify your status or to find out more contact or Freephone 1800 22 33 88.

By completing the RIA, you will earn a nationally accredited, internationally recognised Master of Business Qualification. Your qualification will be awarded by University College Cork.
