Leadership is being reshaped by compounding forces that are no longer episodic, but systemic.

The world of work is changing, yet the systems through which we lead often lag behind. From rising complexity, disruptive technology and structural constraints, leaders are being asked to do more than manage change; they are being asked to reimagine what leadership looks like in a post-linear world.

In such a complex environment, awareness alone is not enough. Leaders may understand the principles,  but confidence drops sharply when it comes to applying these skills in practice. From Insight to Impact explores this critical gap between knowing and doing, drawing on the largest dataset of leadership self-assessments we’ve analysed to date.

Key Insights

1. Awareness is high, application is low
Leaders score themselves strongly on self-awareness, particularly around emotional intelligence and personal resilience. But when asked about applying advanced leadership techniques or adapting styles to different contexts, confidence falls. Leaders know what good looks like, but many struggle to turn insight into action.

2. Teams feel safe, but not always stretched
Creating psychological safety and inclusive environments is a relative strength. Yet the ability to coach, mentor and hold tough conversations lags behind. Leaders are building supportive climates, but not always activating individual growth and accountability.

3. Strategy execution is a critical weak spot
Most leaders rate themselves as moderately confident in strategy and innovation, but few feel like experts. Comfort with day-to-day delivery is not matched by confidence in driving long-term transformation, managing change, or embedding innovation.

4. Influence falters in high-stakes situations
Leaders are familiar with communication and influencing techniques but lack confidence in applying them at senior levels or in complex negotiations. Storytelling, conflict resolution and influencing across functions remain underdeveloped capabilities.

5. Functional gaps constrain leadership impact
Across data, digital transformation, sales and marketing and risk management, confidence levels are low. These functional gaps make it harder for leaders to execute strategy effectively, even when they understand the principles.

Why it Matters

This research reveals a leadership pipeline bottleneck: strong awareness of what leadership should be, but insufficient confidence and capability to deliver at scale. If left unaddressed, organisations risk underperformance, stalled innovation, and disengaged teams.

From Insight to Impact goes beyond awareness to examine what leaders — and organisations — must do to bridge the knowing–doing gap. Discover the patterns behind the data, explore organisational implications, and see where the next wave of leadership development should focus.
